Summer is approaching quickly which means broken hearing aids will be on the rise. Since the worst enemy of hearing aids is moisture and dirt, you should take extra precautions with increased outdoor activities.

One of the best things you can do to avoid the need of a hearing aid repair is to get a Dry-Aid kit to store your hearing aid in at night. This will remove most of the sweat and humidity that accumulate in the hearing aid during the day which can cause the delicate components to corrode and eventually break. It’s also a good idea to take your hearing aids off if possible during intense, or dirty (mowing the lawn) outdoor activity. And if you do remove your hearing aids to mow the lawn, remember to wear ear plugs!

Another important step in preventing hearing aids from breaking in the summer months, as well as the rest of the year, is to routinely visit your local hearing professional to have your ears cleaned.

If your hearing aid does need to be repaired, call Hearing Haven at 1-888-412-3337 or visit them at their Houston or Dallas area clinic. Both locations have a full hearing aid repair lab and repair technicians. They’ve been repairing hearing aids for a long time, and there is no age limit on hearing aids that they will repair. Hearing Haven also has hearing aid dryer kits available.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can check out posts on DIY hearing aid repair at Repair-Your-Hearing-Aid.com to see if it’s a simple problem with your hearing aid that you can fix at home.

To a long and healthy life for your hearing aids!

My Grandfather passed away with Alzheimer’s Disease several years ago, so I know how slow and painful for loved ones the disease is, as are other forms of dementia. Perhaps only slightly less saddening is the fact that some patients are diagnosed incorrectly, or more severely than they truly are.

This can be seen from just one study mentioned in an article on Audiology Online:

Almost 20 years ago, Weinstein and Amsel studied the prevalence of hearing loss in 30 institutionalized patients with the diagnosis of senile dementia and found that 83% of the sample had hearing loss that exceeded 25 dB HL, a percentage significantly higher than a comparable random sample of patients without dementia. Interestingly, 10 of the subjects, or 33%, were reclassified to a less severe category of dementia when their scores on the Mental Status Questionnaire improved through the use of an auditory trainer for amplification.

I remember one patient of ours, Judy, who’s hearing we tested at her nursing home. When we walked in to her room, she was completely unresponsive, lying in her bed, seemingly in another world. We proceeded to set up our equipment, put the headphones on her, and activated the microphone so she could hear through the amplification of our audiometer machine. Judy immediately sat up in her bed with a smile on her face and started chatting away.

In Judy’s case, I am not aware of whether she was diagnosed with any dementia or not, but it was an amazing – and immediate – transformation from complete social isolation to social butterfly as soon as she was brought back the the hearing world.

Hearing is such an important part of our cognitive and social functions, that everyone should routinely have their hearing screened, and encourage their loved one’s to do the same, especially if they have been diagnosed with any cognitive disorders.

Hearing Screening is unfortunately not a required test for dementia testing, but in my opinion is a vital test that should always be considered during that process.

To read more on this subject, you can visit our article “Hearing Loss and Alzheimer’s Disease Closely Related“

Resound has just launched its new Alera hearing aid, and compared to other manufacturer’s like Phonak and Siemens, they’re up to a late start.

But has the wait been worth it? We think it has. Resound has done away with some of the core issues of wireless hearing aid technology. By switching to a 2.4GHz system, Resound has managed to take the time delay down to an imperceptible 20ms (1/50 of a second). In competing products the delay time of the wireless transmission is much higher, causing a distracting echo in situations such as listening to your television through the wireless mode.

Additionally, Resound’s Alera does not require the use of a body worn device for transmission to the hearing aid. For example, the Resound Alera’s Unite TV streamer plugs into your tv and streams the signal directly to your hearing aids from up to 23 feet away.

The Resound Unite Phone Clip is a little different story; although it is powerful enough to transmit from your pocket, it contains the mic, therefore requiring you to either clip it on like a lapel, or hold it in your hand like a cell phone. But that shouldn’t stop you from slipping it into your pocket and listening to your favorite album stored on your cell phone. Hello wireless earbuds.

If you’d like to see the difference Resound Alera can make for you, come visit one of our locations in North Dallas, Texas or Houston, Texas. And make sure to mention the coupon code “Alera-Blog” for a free Resound Alera hearing aid trial and hearing test.

To better hearing,
The Hearing Haven Family – Restoring The Music Of Life!
