Almost 35 years ago, my father took his broken hearing in for
repair to a hearing aid store, and was told, “Those are sealed units that can’t be repaired. You need to buy a new hearing aid.”
As he said that, the salesman threw my dad’s hearing aid into a trash can. My father did buy a new hearing aid that day, but he also dug his old hearing aid out of the trash when the man left the room.
A few years later, I was working as a hearing aid repair tech
for a large hearing aid manufacturer. I fixed that hearing aid for my dad, and
told myself that I would always be sensitive to other people’s needs, so I would never treat someone with such a cavalier attitude.
Now as the director of Hearing Haven, I am able to participate in helping many people to get their hearing aids working again - regardless of age or condition.
